	<answer label="Reggie Smith">OF 1B, b. 1945. These men made it to the bigs under unusual circumstances.  Grier took a seat that had been vacant for two years, while Smith became an unexpected starter for the 1967 pennant-winning Red Sox, after it appeared that he would remain in the minors.  Both played in big games&#8212;Dred Scott (1857) and the Prize Cases (1863) for Grier, and two Fall Classics for Smith.  Injuries hobbled them in the late stages of their playing days, and both patrolled the "middle ground": Grier in his generally centrist opinions, and Smith as a center fielder early in his career.</answer>
