	<answer label="Chief Zimmer">C Mgr, 1860-1949.  These players had long-term influences on their games.  Matthews is famous for his majority opinion in Yick Wo v. Hopkins (1886), which invalidated a neutrally-stated San Francisco ordinance that was clearly aimed at Chinese residents.  Neutral language that produced discrimination still offended the Constitution, Matthews reasoned.  That principle guided the Court in many 20th century civil rights cases.  Zimmer was the first catcher to move directly behind the plate for every pitch; previously, they had positioned themselves 10 to 20 feet back.  That allowed catchers to assume a more important defensive and strategic role in the field.</answer>
