	<answer label="Gates Brown">OF DH, b. 1939.  These pudgy players had specialties, but were not flashy otherwise.  Nelson was an expert on admiralty and patent law.  The principle of &#8220;nonobviousness&#8221; that he articulated in Hotchkiss v. Greenwood (1850) remains as a criterion used to award patents.  In other decisions he tended to defer to legislatures and established law.  Brown&#8217;s career as a pinch hitter got off to a smashing start.  Called upon to pinch-hit in his first major league at-bat, he swatted a home run.  Poor fielding prevented him from becoming a Tiger starter.  Of his 107 career pinch hits 16 were homers.</answer>
