Johnson was the first great dissenter on the bench, often resisting the iron grip of Marshall. He was also one of the prolific opinion writers of his era; only Marshall and Story logged more. A creative thinker, Johnson saw written opinions as opportunities for experimentation. The same could be said of Stengel's views, and his use of the English language, dubbed “Stengelese.” During spring training he once ordered his players to line up alphabetically according to height.
