Burton was the only Republican appointed to the Court between 1933 and 1953.  Carter was the only Democratic President&#8212;since Republican William H. Taft began the tradition&#8212;not to throw out a first pitch on baseball's opening day.  Politically both men threw left, and their peers regarded them as immensely likable men.  Carter, in fact, may go down as one of the best ex-Presidents in United States history.</answer>
