	<answer label="Cliff Mapes">OF, b. 1922.  Thompson served from 1823 to 1843, and is considered a transitional figure between the Marshall and Taney eras.  In Ogden v. Saunders (1827), he joined the 4-3 majority that led to Marshall&#8217;s only constitutional dissent.  Thompson played an important role in jurisprudence involving the Commerce Clause.  Mapes was a bridge between the past and the future, too.  On the Yankees he wore #3 after Babe Ruth.  When that was retired, he later wore #7 before Mickey Mantle asked for it.  Perhaps that makes Mapes the only player ever to have "his" number retired twice by the same team!</answer>
