RHP Mgr, b. 1934. In 1989, took over as manager of the Yankees in the year after Billy Martin died in a car accident. OF b. 1917. Had a long minor league career, and made it to the show in 1945, even though he had only one arm. 2B SS Mgr, 1928-1989. Vehicular accidents essentially ended the careers of these players. Paterson was appointed to the Court by President Washington in 1793, and was an important player in the Court’s decisions of the 1790s, which helped to establish the legitimacy of the federal government. In 1804, he was seriously injured in a carriage accident while tending to his circuit, and died two years later. Martin was famous for his spats and multiple hirings-firings in his relations with Yankee owner George Steinbrenner. A tragic auto accident ended his career, and his life, on Christmas Day in 1989. LHP, b. 1938. Only a small number of major leaguers, including Kaat, can claim to have played in four decades.
