David M. Gossett, Partner

David Gossett specializes in Supreme Court and appellate litigation, with particular expertise in administrative law, ERISA, class actions, federal preemption, punitive damages, arbitration, and the death penalty. Recently named by Washingtonian magazine as one of the top 40 lawyers under 40 in Washington and by Lawdragon magazine as one of its "Lawdragon 500 New Stars, New Worlds," he argued his second case in the Supreme Court in March 2006. He has also been the primary brief-writer in a number of other Supreme Court cases, has drafted numerous briefs in various federal and state courts of appeals, and has argued successfully before the Ninth Circuit and in state court. He is co-author of the chapter on Supreme Court litigation in Business and Commercial Litigation in Federal Courts (2d ed. 2005).

Prior to joining Mayer, Brown, David practiced in the Civil Division at the Department of Justice. He is one of the Executive Editors of the Green Bag, a law journal, has twice taught summer courses at the Riga Graduate School of Law, in Riga, Latvia, and is on the Alumni Board of Reed College and the Executive Council of the Lawyers Committee for the Shakespeare Theatre. He is also the Secretary of the Edward Coke Appellate Inn of Court, the only Inn in the United States devoted exclusively to appellate practice.

David received his B.A. from Reed College. After studying social psychology as a National Science Foundation Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania (where he received his M.A.) and the University of Colorado, he received his J.D. with High Honors from the University of Chicago, where he was Order of the Coif and an editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. He clerked for Judge Diane P. Wood on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
